The inauguration of President Cyril Ramaphosa on 19 June 2024 marked the beginning of the seventh administration of democratic South Africa, formed as a Government of National Unity following the 2024 national and provincial elections.
The Presidency is the centre of government. It supports the President in exercising the constitutional responsibilities of head of state and head of the national executive, coordinates the work of departments across the three spheres of government, and is accountable to Parliament for delivery of the national programme.
Herbert Baker’s sandstone crescent, completed in 1913 and the seat of the Presidency ever since. The amphitheatre between its two wings is where South Africa inaugurates its presidents.
The converging arms of the central green pall read as the joining of diverse elements onto a single road ahead. It flew for the first time on the day South Africa first voted as one nation.
No official meaning is attached to any individual colour. That was a deliberate decision by its designer: the six colours together summarise the country’s flag history rather than each standing for a separate idea.
